Welcome To Farthest Reaches, Inc.

Wernher Magnus Maximilian Freiherr von Braun (March 23, 1912 – June 16, 1977) was a German-American rocket scientist, astronautics engineer and space architect, becoming one of the leading figures in the development of rocket technology in Germany and the United States. He was a member of the Nazi party and a commissioned SS officer. Wernher von Braun was said to be the preeminent rocket engineer of the 20th century.

In his 20s and early 30s, von Braun was the central figure in Germany's pre-war rocket development programme, responsible for the design and realization of the deadly V-2 combat rocket during World War II. After the war, he and some of his rocket team were taken to the United States as part of the then-secret Operation Paperclip. In 1955, ten years after entering the country, von Braun became a naturalized U.S. citizen.

Von Braun worked on the US Army intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) program before his group was assimilated by NASA, under which he served as director of the newly formed Marshall Space Flight Center and as the chief architect of the Saturn V launch vehicle, the superbooster that propelled the Apollo spacecraft to the Moon. According to one NASA source, he is "without doubt, the greatest rocket scientist in history. His crowning achievement ... was to lead the development of the Saturn V booster rocket that helped land the first men on the Moon in July 1969." He received the 1975 National Medal of Science.

FarthestReaches.Com is pleased to offer many of his original documents as well as those from his fellow rocket scientists.

About this collection

These unique items come from the estate of Ms. Doris Hunter who was the former Chief of Archives for the Alabama Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.  She served through the von Braun years during which time she enjoyed a close personal relationship him and others.  Throughout her very distinguished career, Doris accumulated a collection of her own, including the items offered here, which were either gifted to her or obtained  from luminaries she met along the way.

Each of the items that follow with the exception of one that comes from Farthest Reaches own inventory will be accompanied by a beautifully detailed letter of authenticity from her estate, describing the association of Doris with von Braun and attesting to the chain of ownership. These letters are hand signed by Doris Hunter's Grandson and will be co-signed by myself on behalf of Farthest Reaches.  Now enjoy the ride that follows and stop back regularly as this page will continue to be updated with other exciting von Braun and German Rocket Scientist memorabilia.

A young Wernher von Braun hand written draft of letter to aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky
Amazing Content!!

Referring to himself as a "younger man" in this hand written undated draft of his letter to aviation and helicopter pioneer Igor Sikorsky, Wernher von Braun goes on in a very personal manner to express his profound admiration and hopes and prayers that he will,  "be equally blessed and ....live to see the day when my (his) boyhood dream has become reality"  He describes Sikorsky as one who has "determinedly and faithfully followed his star", despite "incredible odds".

It seems that von Braun was unable to take advantage of his first chance to meet Sikorsky during a trip to New York and states in this letter that had he known sooner he, "would certainly have called off everything in order to use the opportunity of making your acquaintance."  This 3 page letter (measures 8"x10.5") hand written in pencil letter gives us a very personal glimpse into the world of one of the great minds behind America's Manned Space Program and a peek at one of the aviation pioneers whose accomplishments he aspired to emulate.

Accompanied by hand signed letter of provenance from the family of Doris Hunter.

Wernher von Braun hand written application for membership in the American Rocket Society - February, 1950

Offered here is an original application to the American Rocket Society completed on their official application form in Wernher von Braun's own hand.  It appears to be his personal copy as the "other original" would have been submitted to the ARS for their consideration.  This three page document is nothing short of amazing.  Dr. von Braun's application is in essence a detailed sketch of his personal, educational and work history including his serving as assistant to Hermann Oberth and his work at Peenemuende.  It is complete and accurate up to its date of submission on February 23, 1950, some 19+ years before the historic flight of Apollo 11.  At the time of this application von Braun had been in this country for just over 4 years and was exactly 1 month shy of his 38th birthday (March 23).

This hand completed application could be considered the ultimate von Braun document and surely one you will NEVER see offered elsewhere.  I consider this historically significant and unquestionably one of gems of this sale.  The scans provided here speak for themselves.  The pages open as a foldout and except for soft fold lines from years of storage, is in beautiful condition.  von Braun both writes and prints his name no less than three times on the first page and a forth if you consider his anecdotal pencil note at the top.

Accompanied by hand signed letter of provenance from the family of Doris Hunter.

1971 Explorers Club Membership Card - Issued to, carried and hand signed by Wernher von Braun

Offered here is the actual Explorers Club membership card issued to and hand signed by Wernher von Braun in 1971.  As you can see in the attached scan it is in excellent condition and boldly and beautifully hand signed.

To emphasize the historical significance of von Braun's affiliation with the Explorers Club, perhaps some background information on the club itself would be in order here.  The Explorers Club was founded in New York City in 1904, with its mission to promote the scientific exploration of land, sea, air, and space by supporting research and education in the physical, natural and biological sciences.

The Club's members have been responsible for an illustrious series of famous firsts: First to the North Pole, first to the South Pole, first to the summit of Mount Everest, first to the deepest point in the ocean, first to the surface of the moon—all accomplished by our members.  With this in mind, it is only logical that Dr. von Braun would be an esteemed member of this organization given his many significant contributions science and discovery.
