Welcome To Farthest Reaches, Inc.

Farthest Reaches is both honored and appreciative for the opportunity to have known Wally Schirra both personally and professionally over the years.  He was everything you've every read or heard about him....and more.  Wally is and always will be missed by everyone who ever came to know him and for those of you who did have that pleasure, I'm sure you would all agree.

Farthest Reaches is very pleased that we continue our close relationship with Wally's family and that end are offering quite a number of items this pioneer astronaut's personal archives.  Keep checking back as this page will update periodically.  Keep in mind that these are for the most part, unique one of a kind items, so don't delay if interested because when they are gone....they're gone!  Happy browsing or as Wally would have said, "Happy Landings!"

Actual Mission Patch & Flag WORN and FLOWN on Wally Schirra's Gemini VI Space Suit
from the Schirra Family Collection

close up of flag and mission patch

View as framed

Flight Certification by Jo Schirra & Tom Stafford

The framed American flag (6"x4")_ and mission patch that are shown here were affixed to the space suit worn by Astronaut Walter M. Schirra during his historic Gemini 6 (GT-6A) flight with Astronaut Thomas P. Stafford on December 15-16, 1965.  As originally designed, this mission's patch carried the designation "GTA-6" (Gemini-Titan Agena) and showed Gemini 6 during rendezvous with the Agena target vehicle.  After the failed launch of the Agena it was decided to rendezvous with Gemini 7 instead.  The patch was redesigned accordingly with the legend "GEMINI 6" in place of the original "GTA-6" legend and with the Gemini 7 spacecraft in place of the Agena.

The outside dimensions of the frame itself measure 15.75" x 12.5".  Following this mission and until being offered to Farthest Reaches for sale, this unique piece of space history was proudly displayed in it's frame in the Schirra family home, exactly as it appears here.  It comes with excellent provenance in the form of a letter (see scan) flight certifying the flag and patch but both Jo Schirra and Wally's crewmate Astronaut Tom Stafford.  This is a wonderful opportunity to own a rather personal, flown artifact of a type that is rarely made available to the collecting community and could be the center piece of any serious space collection.

Pre Apollo 7 Christmas Card hand signed by 18 Astronauts including the entire Apollo 11 and 15 Crews
from the Schirra Family Collection

Merry Christmas

To a SPECIAL BOY

Offered here is a unique and most personal item from the archives of Astronaut Wally Schirra.  This Hallmark Christmas Card is affectionately dedicated “To Wally, From The Troops” and goes on to say, “This is to help you get fit for the flight !”.   From what I can ascertain this card was most likely sent to Wally around Xmas 1967 as he trained for his Apollo flight which launched on October 11, 1968.

Making this truly exceptional and unique is the who’s who of astronauts who have hand signed this personal holiday greeting.  Listed in alphabetical order, they are…..

Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11)
Bill Anders (Apollo 8)
Neil Armstrong (Apollo 11)
Alan Bean (Apollo 12)
Frank Borman (Apollo 8)
John Bull
Mike Collins (Apollo 11)
Charles Conrad (Apollo 12)
Ron Evans (Apollo 17)
Fred Haise (Apollo 13)
James Irwin (Apollo 15)
James McDivitt (Apollo 9)
Dave Scott (Apollo 9, 15)
Alan Shepard (Apollo 14)
Tom Stafford (Apollo 10)
Jack Swigert (Apollo 13)
Al Worden (Apollo 15)
John Young (Apollo 10, 16)

There are many ways to do the math here so I’ll leave to you to sort these names to your own satisfaction.  I will say however that represented here are the authentic signatures of 18 Apollo Astronauts with 9 also flying on Gemini missions.  Additionally, there are 8 of 12 Moonwalkers and the entire Apollo 11 and 15 crews!!

This card is in outstanding condition having been stored in a safe for many years until being given to Farthest Reaches for it’s sale.  It measures 11” x 5.5” (when closed).  Santa’s outfit is felt textured.  The signatures are you can see are nothing short of outstanding.  It should be noted that there are a few unidentified non astronaut signatures as well.  This absolutely unique item comes with a letter of authenticity from Jo Schirra.

The ULTIMATE Mercury 7 hand signed photo
from the Schirra Family Collection

When it comes to Mercury 7 hand signed photos, none are more sought after than the classic 10" x 8" example offered here.  This one  however falls into a class by itself.  Here's why:

1.  This photo is in virtually perfect condition making it most unique given others appearing on the market from time to time, will more often than not have condition issues effecting either image or signatures. Examples of this quality are nearly unobtainable.

2..  The signatures are as strong the day they were signed, despite being almost 50 years old!  Again, very difficult to come by.

3.  The image is NOT personalized, largely considered to be the most desirable state for such an item.

4.  Each signature is hand signed that astronaut's vintage style
.

5.  Provenance is ironclad given this amazing signed image comes directly from the Schirra family collection where it has been safely stored for many years.  The storage envelope hand annotated by Wally will be included with this lot and is shown in scan.    Astronaut owned memorabilia is the most desirable of all and to that end, it will be accompanied by a letter of authenticity, hand signed by Jo Schirra who attests to its history/chain of ownership.

This is without question, an investment quality item that will become the cornerstone of it's new owner's space history collection.

Wally's hand written comments

This is a one of a kind.  By order of the President (Marcos) of the Philippines Walter M. Schirra Jr. was conferred the rank of Commander in the Philippine Legion Of Honor.  This was ordered by President Marcos and carried out by Ernesto S. Mata, General, Chief of Staff.  Now this was some serious business and as you can see, was accompanied by some impressive military hardware w/ribbon for their newest Commander, Walter M. Schirra (left image).  The center photograph shows the plaque itself which carries the executive order giving Wally his new rank.   Finally, the beautiful fine wood presentation box is shown in the right hand image.

If all that isn't enough, some lucky person can have a piece of very personal space history by owning this Legion of Honor Medal.  This is the REAL thing folks, not the reproductions found on Ebay day after day.  A TRUE piece of history given to Astronaut Wally Schirra for service to his fellow man during the Gemini Program.  Don't let this one get away!!

This certificate confers upon Wally Schirra membership in the "Secret Order of Quiet Birdmen", as a Certified Goodfellow.  While there seems to be some serious mystery surrounding the actual activities of those belonging to this organization, we DO know that it was established in January 1921 and has as it's members, some very illustrious aviators, including Charles Lindbergh AND per this certificate, Walter M. Schirra.

The certificate itself measures a stealthy 8" x 11" and has been in a place of honor in the Wally Schirra study until such time as its being offered for sale though Farthest Reaches Inc.  Will come with a COA from Jo Schirra, assuming she knows that Wally was even a member of this secret order.  Someone may have to break it to her.  Hope it's not me!  Seriously though, this is a certificate steeped in military history so don't let it slip away.  Would make a great addition to your space history collection.

Wally's hand written comments

"Space Commerce an Industry Assessment"
U.S. Dept. of Commerce, PB, May 1988, 136 pgs

The purpose of this report was to identify existing and potential worldwide markets for space related goods and services, focusing on five major areas. They were, Space Transportation, Satellite Communications, Satellite Remote Sensing, Space-Based Industrial Facilities and Materials Research and Processing in Space. In addition this report discusses the insurance and finance issues relative to those identified areas.

This document was Wally Schirra's personal copy and believe me when I tell you that he pulls no punches as reflected in hand written comments found within 29 of the first 40 pages and a final page of notes at the end.  I have included a few samples for your review (see above). It is exceedingly interesting and rare to get such an unabashed look into the mind of a pioneer astronaut, especially one with such a keen vision of the future of space commerce.  This a unique item and will make great reading as well as a wonderful addition to any space history collection.  This document will be accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Jo Schirra.

"From The Balloon To The Moon" by H.V. Pat Reilly
Advanced Preview, March 2, 1992, 32 pgs

This advance preview of the not yet complete title of the same name, was sent to Wally Schirra with thanks for providing the "Forward".  It's subject was the 200 year aeronautical history of the state of New Jersey and would include over 1,000 names of aviation pioneers from that state.  A number of the pages in this preview have been hand corrected for accuracy in Wally's own hand but making it all the more special is the hand written draft of the "Forward" itself.  This page is shown above on right, and includes Wally telling of his childhood interest in Buck Rodgers as well as his first exposure to actual aircraft that cemented his interest in aviation.  It goes on to mention the Naval Academy and his "leaving Earth three times as an Astronaut.

Throughout my association with Wally, I had never known him to be a fan of handwriting long inscriptions, letters or anything substantial for that matter.  He was quite computer savvy and preferred that method to pen and paper.  Coming across this fully hand written page was quite a surprise and though it isn't hand signed, given the item itself, the letter from the author (see center photo) and the COA from Jo Schirra that will be included, it's provenance is ironclad.  This would make a most unusual and interesting addition to any aviation or space history collection.

"Gotcha!" - Flown on Sigma 7

From the personal collection of Astronaut Schirra

Provenance from Jim Rathmann

The pack of cigarettes shown above represent the most historically significant tobacco artifact of the 20th century.  The story behind them is best told in Astronaut Wally Schirra's own words:

"Before I flew on Sigma 7, Gordon Cooper and Jim Rathman, the Indy racer, arranged to put a miniature, airplane catering sized, bottle of Cutty Sark Scotch and one row of Tarryton cigarettes way in the back of a compartment in the instrument panel. The attitude control handle had a "remove before flight" tag on it as well. I drank the Scotch as soon as I had a chance on board the recovery carrier. The medics all wondered why I had a small alcohol level in my post flight blood tests! I guess a nicotine level would have really thrown them! I still have the row of cigarettes, and the tag"

Astronaut Wally Schirra has asked Farthest Reaches to handle the sale of the very pack of Tarryton cigarettes described above. They were flown aboard the historic six orbit mission of Sigma 7 on October 20, 1965, as Wally became the 5th American in space.

As far as we can determine, these cigarettes represent the ONLY tobacco product to ever fly into space aboard an American spacecraft.  Beyond that, flown Mercury artifacts are almost impossible to obtain, with the exception of small fragments of wire, an occasional heat shield plug, or from time to time, a medallion. This amazing one of a kind "flown GOTCHA" reflects the humor and camaraderie that helped our daredevil Mercury Astronauts to cope with tremendous pressure while "maintaining an even strain" as they risked life and limb.  As a symbol it truly embodies the notion of their having "The Right Stuff" and would represent the centerpiece of any serious space history collection. Documentation in the form of a letter, hand signed by Astronaut Wally Schirra will accompany this unquestionably authentic Mercury flown artifact.

Wally Schirra's Original Hand Written Gemini VI A - PPK Manifest

From the archives of Wally Schirra comes his original hand written PPK (Personal Preference Kit) manifest.  This is the first time the contents of any Gemini PPK list have been made available to the public, let alone for sale.  It details those personal items Wally choose to carry aboard his Gemini VI A spacecraft during that historic and wildly successful mission.

This document was held for years by Deke Slayton who was the chief of the Astronaut Office and besides the astronauts themselves, the only person with knowledge of which personal items actually flew on these missions.  It was recently discovered and returned to Wally by Bobbie Slayton who came across it while perusing Deke's files.  Deke has hand written "Wally" in ink at the top of the list which is otherwise written in pencil by Wally himself.

This incredible artifact measures 2.75" x  5" and will be accompanied by a letter of authenticity hand signed by Wally Schirra.  Don't miss this opportunity to own a truly unique artifact from the early days of our manned space program with provenance that just doesn't get any better.

This Liberty Bell 7 FLOWN washer in lucite was presented to Wally Schirra's by the Kansas Cosmosphere and remained on display in his study until being given to Farthest Reaches Inc. for this sale.  His close friendship with Gus Grissom gave this item special sentimental significance.  Wally had strong feelings about the public being misinformed thanks to Tom
Wolf's, "The Right Stuff", that Gus was responsible for his capsule's hatch prematurely "blowing", sending it to the bottom of the sea.  Thanks in part to Wally's own efforts, it was established that Gus did NOT blow the hatch and yet, the myth has been  perpetuated by Wolf's film over the years.

Regarding the lucite, it was produced by the Cosmosphere during the restoration of LB7 and is well known and documented that these small pieces of that spacecraft did indeed fly into space on that historic mission.  This item will come with a letter of authenticity hand signed by Jo Schirra.
