Offered here is a unique and most personal item from the archives of Astronaut Wally Schirra. This Hallmark Christmas Card is affectionately dedicated “To Wally, From The Troops” and goes on to say, “This is to help you get fit for the flight !”. From what I can ascertain this card was most likely sent to Wally around Xmas 1967 as he trained for his Apollo flight which launched on October 11, 1968.
Making this truly exceptional and
unique is the who’s who of astronauts who have hand signed this
personal holiday greeting. Listed in alphabetical order, they
are….. There are many ways to do the math here so I’ll leave to you to sort these names to your own satisfaction. I will say however that represented here are the authentic signatures of 18 Apollo Astronauts with 9 also flying on Gemini missions. Additionally, there are 8 of 12 Moonwalkers and the entire Apollo 11 and 15 crews!!
This card is
in outstanding condition having been stored in a safe for many years
until being given to Farthest Reaches for it’s sale. It measures
11” x 5.5” (when closed). Santa’s outfit is felt textured. The
signatures are you can see are nothing short of outstanding. It
should be noted that there are a few unidentified non astronaut
signatures as well. This absolutely unique item comes with a letter
of authenticity from Jo Schirra. |

The ULTIMATE Mercury 7 hand signed photo
from the Schirra Family Collection
|
When it comes to Mercury 7 hand signed photos, none are more sought after than the classic 10" x 8" example offered here. This one however falls into a class by itself. Here's why:
1. This photo is
in virtually perfect condition making it most unique given others
appearing on the market from time to time, will more often than not
have condition issues effecting either image or signatures. Examples
of this quality are nearly unobtainable.
This is without question, an investment quality item that will become the cornerstone of it's new owner's space history collection. |

Wally's hand written comments

This is a one of a kind. By order of the President (Marcos) of the Philippines Walter M. Schirra Jr. was conferred the rank of Commander in the Philippine Legion Of Honor. This was ordered by President Marcos and carried out by Ernesto S. Mata, General, Chief of Staff. Now this was some serious business and as you can see, was accompanied by some impressive military hardware w/ribbon for their newest Commander, Walter M. Schirra (left image). The center photograph shows the plaque itself which carries the executive order giving Wally his new rank. Finally, the beautiful fine wood presentation box is shown in the right hand image. If all that isn't enough, some lucky person can have a piece of very personal space history by owning this Legion of Honor Medal. This is the REAL thing folks, not the reproductions found on Ebay day after day. A TRUE piece of history given to Astronaut Wally Schirra for service to his fellow man during the Gemini Program. Don't let this one get away!! |

"Space
Commerce an Industry Assessment" The purpose of this report was to identify existing and potential worldwide markets for space related goods and services, focusing on five major areas. They were, Space Transportation, Satellite Communications, Satellite Remote Sensing, Space-Based Industrial Facilities and Materials Research and Processing in Space. In addition this report discusses the insurance and finance issues relative to those identified areas. This document was Wally Schirra's personal copy and believe me when I tell you that he pulls no punches as reflected in hand written comments found within 29 of the first 40 pages and a final page of notes at the end. I have included a few samples for your review (see above). It is exceedingly interesting and rare to get such an unabashed look into the mind of a pioneer astronaut, especially one with such a keen vision of the future of space commerce. This a unique item and will make great reading as well as a wonderful addition to any space history collection. This document will be accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Jo Schirra. |

"From The
Balloon To The Moon" by H.V. Pat Reilly This advance preview of the not yet complete title of the same name, was sent to Wally Schirra with thanks for providing the "Forward". It's subject was the 200 year aeronautical history of the state of New Jersey and would include over 1,000 names of aviation pioneers from that state. A number of the pages in this preview have been hand corrected for accuracy in Wally's own hand but making it all the more special is the hand written draft of the "Forward" itself. This page is shown above on right, and includes Wally telling of his childhood interest in Buck Rodgers as well as his first exposure to actual aircraft that cemented his interest in aviation. It goes on to mention the Naval Academy and his "leaving Earth three times as an Astronaut. Throughout my association with Wally, I had never known him to be a fan of handwriting long inscriptions, letters or anything substantial for that matter. He was quite computer savvy and preferred that method to pen and paper. Coming across this fully hand written page was quite a surprise and though it isn't hand signed, given the item itself, the letter from the author (see center photo) and the COA from Jo Schirra that will be included, it's provenance is ironclad. This would make a most unusual and interesting addition to any aviation or space history collection.

The pack of cigarettes shown above represent the most historically significant tobacco artifact of the 20th century. The story behind them is best told in Astronaut Wally Schirra's own words:
Astronaut Wally Schirra has asked Farthest Reaches to handle the sale of the very pack of Tarryton cigarettes described above. They were flown aboard the historic six orbit mission of Sigma 7 on October 20, 1965, as Wally became the 5th American in space. As far as we can determine, these cigarettes represent the ONLY tobacco product to ever fly into space aboard an American spacecraft. Beyond that, flown Mercury artifacts are almost impossible to obtain, with the exception of small fragments of wire, an occasional heat shield plug, or from time to time, a medallion. This amazing one of a kind "flown GOTCHA" reflects the humor and camaraderie that helped our daredevil Mercury Astronauts to cope with tremendous pressure while "maintaining an even strain" as they risked life and limb. As a symbol it truly embodies the notion of their having "The Right Stuff" and would represent the centerpiece of any serious space history collection. Documentation in the form of a letter, hand signed by Astronaut Wally Schirra will accompany this unquestionably authentic Mercury flown artifact. |
